My Fine Is....$355.50

Tuesday, January 16, 2007
I borrowed this from Tiggerprr, and I just had to play along and see what my fine would be! I dont consider myself a bad girl, but I guess time will tell...
If you participate, link back to us!

Here’s how it works: You don’t have to confess your answers, just the amount of your fine. And NO, it is not PER incident (otherwise, some of us would have totals more than the national debt - like mine almost does!).

To arrive at your “fine”, if you did a certain act on the following list, fine yourself the listed amount. Then when done going through the list, tally your fine for the total.

Smoked pot — $10
Did acid — $5
Ever had sex at church — $25

The Cab Ride

Courtesy of "The Black Bear Advertiser." A small, free newspaper published in the town next to ours.

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, and then drive away.
But I had seen too may impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.
So I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.
By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.
She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated".
"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I dont mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice."
I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I dont have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I dont have very long." I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.
"What route would you like me to take?" I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now."
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a drieway that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.
"Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "There are other passengers." I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said "Thankyou."
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I didnt pick up any more passengers that shift I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of the day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?
What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?
On a quick review, I dont think that I have done anything more important in my life.
We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.
People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

*note* When I read this, it definetely brought tears to my eyes. You definetely dont find this kind of chivalry much these days. That man made that elderly woman feel not so alone when she needed someone the most. I thought my readers might appreciate this as much as I did.

update

Well, today is January 16. That means I have 18 days left until I no longer work here! But guess what they're doing to me? They've cut back my hours drastically. I dont know if it's punishment for quitting or what, but I went from a fulltime 40 hours a week to 16 hours! It's really making me mad, but being as I'm about to leave anyway, I'm keeping my mouth shut.

I went ahead and did a Thursday 13 for this week, because I'll be off from work the rest of the week. Last week I missed it :( I also missed my Friday's Feast, but I cant do one for this week because they dont have a new one posted yet. I also cannot put my T13 link up at the hub because they're not ready for the new one yet. *sigh*

Well, I just figured I'd explain why my T13 was up so early. I'm off to check out the rest of my favorite blogs before my night is over! *hugs to you all* I hope you all have a wonderful week :)

Thinking meme

Monday, January 15, 2007
I saw this meme at Island Life. Although she didnt tag me, I thought it would be fun to do :) I'll be posting some pictures I took with my new digital camera in a little while.

1. If you had to choose one vice in exclusion of all others what would it be?
Definetely reading. If I dont have a good book, I feel almost depressed! I love books.

2. If you could change one specific thing about the world what would it be?
Poverty. It hurts so bad to see a child or a family that doesnt have enough to eat or a place to live. There are so many people in this world who dont have the means to provide for themselves. It has to be the needy children that bother me the most though. At least most adults have the ability to do SOMETHING, children are just helpless unless we provide for them.

3. Name the cartoon character you identify with the most.
At this point in my life I feel like I identify with Speedy Gonzalez (the mouse) more than any other character! It seems like I'm always on the go, always running around doing something!

4. If you could live one day in your life over again which one would it be?
At the risk of copying Kailani, I'm going to say having my girls. That was the most amazing day of my life! They were so tiny and so healthy.
I also wish I could relive the day I graduated high school! I felt so proud and accomplished :)

5. If you could go back in history and spend a day with one person who would it be?
No one famous that I can think of. But, I would LOVE to have met my Grandma's dad. She tells me all the time that I'm a lot like him and that she thinks we would have been very close. Unfortunately he died right after grandma adopted my mom.

6. What is the one thing you lost, sold or threw away that you wish you could have back?
My Grandma gave me a ring for my 16th birthday. It had a small solitary diamond set in a heart. For the life of me, I do NOT know what happened to that ring!

7. What is your one most important contribution to this world?
This is a very hard question for me to answer. I honestly do not know.

8. What is your one hidden talent that nearly no one knows about?
I'm a fairly decent singer. (Thats just my opinion, shared by my girls! LOL)

9. What is your most cherished possession?
My pictures. I have pictures of everyone in my family. I have pictures of my grandma that were sent out with her birth announcements! My photo albums and boxes of pictures are very important to me :)

10. What one person influenced your life the most when growing up?
I would have to say my Grandma (mama). I wouldnt be who I am today if it hadnt been for her.

11. What one word describes you better than any other?
Fun!

25 days to go...

Tuesday, January 09, 2007
Well, I finally decided that February 3 will be my last day at my job. I will definetely miss you all, but it will only be for a short while! I'll still be able to post once in a while, and then *claps hands and jumps up and down* I'll be getting my OWN 'puter!

So, I see on Kailani's blog that there will be a Valentine's Day Goodie Swap (I spied that in her sidebar!). I definetely want to be able to participate in THAT! I love doing that stuff!

Oh yah, something else I wanted to say... When I posted my Thursday Thirteen last week, Kailani emailed me and told me that I could link to it at the Thursday Thirteen Hub. Umm, DUH SAM! I didnt know that! I linked to my post, and all I had to do was sit back and watch the comments pour in! I loved it!!! And I just want to say THANKYOU to all of you who came and left lovely comments :) And then again when I posted my Friday's Feast. I also visited a bunch more blogs that I hadnt ever been to. It was great!

Well, my girls started back to school today. Thankyou Lord. I was sooooo ready for them to go back! Is that awful? But, they were ready for it too! They looked so cute in one of their new outfits they got for Christmas. I'll have to post a picture of them in it. I know I have been neglectful with my digital camera, but I have to get a memory card before I can take more pics. Presently my camera only holds 9 pictures!

Okay ya'll, I'm outta here! *hugs to you all*

happy new year

Monday, January 01, 2007
My fondest wish for you, my dear readers, is that ALL the good things in the world happen for you and your families! I have very much enjoyed reading every one of you. I have been very blessed to have gained such wonderful, joyous friends! It is my hope that I never lose touch with you! I want to wish you all a Happy New Year from me and mine to you and yours :)

I have some sad news...
I'm going to be quitting my job soon. I've been training a young guy to take my place. I'm just ready to be a SAHM for a while. There are a lot of things at home that I want to do, but with my work hours, I just cant seem to get them done. But, dont sweat it ya'll because I will still be in and out of here. Although my posts wont be as frequent, I'll still be able to come up here and use the computer. I'll also be buying my OWN computer when we file our taxes! SO, that wont be long!!! Then I can be here during NORMAL hours LOL!! But I just wanted you guys to know that each and every one of you that I have met here are dear and special to me. And, a couple of you have my real address, so if you feel like corresponding through snail mail once in a while, I'd love that!
I havent decided when I'm leaving exactly. It might be as long as the end of January, or I might go ahead and go whenever I get this guy ready to be here by himself. But dont worry, I'll let you know! *hugs for all my great friends* I feel so blessed!

Guess what? I went with my Mom on friday night to see that movie "Pursuit of Happyness" It was GREAT!! I laughed, and I got teary eyed too! Will Smith is great anyways, but in this movie, I love him!! And his son is too cute! I learned a joke from the little boy... (just remember I have a daughter named Shelby LOL)

little boy: knock knock
dad: who's there?
little boy: Shelby
dad: Shelby who?
little boy: *singing* Shel-by coming round the mountain when she comes...

hehe...I thought that was really cute :)
I love you guys!
